JDumb question... do you think 33km each way is a do-able bicycle commute (once worked up to over time)? It's reasonably flat but can have very strong headwinds (almost a guarantee that there will be a 50km/h headwind in at least one direction about 70% of the time... possibly both directions if the wind changes during the day).

MaxIt's not a dumb question, and my answer is that I think it's very do-able. My regular commute is 26Km each way. I would find another 7Km just fine. My commute is very hilly, which is sort of like having a headwind (except not as demoralising).

I think you should work your way up to it - perhaps by driving some of the way and riding the rest of the way. Over time, you'll find yourself able to ride longer/drive less until you're finally riding the whole way. If you need to carry anything, I would recommend investing in a rack and panniers if possible, however a backpack will do in a pinch. I commuted with a backpack for 12 months, and it was OK, but I'm much happier with panniers.

JThanks for answering my question. If you don't mind me asking, how long did it take for you to work up to a 26km-each-way distance?

MaxIt took me a few months to get to a point where a 26Km ride was comfortable. In saying that, I was terrifically overweight and unfit. Someone who is already moderately fit and not obese would be able to work up to it within a few weeks, assuming 2 or 3 rides a week. The important thing is to not overdo it at first. If you're sore and miserable after a ride, give your body a few days to recover. Saddle soreness is not uncommon and can be a deal-breaker. But if you persist and don't try to go too far too soon, you'll be fine. Your body will become accustomed to riding position, weight distribution etc and it'll be all good.
